A field guide for life-science students

Science degrees lead way beyond the lab.

STEMTransit: helping life science students transition from the lab to the boardroom — a map of the careers you can build with a science degree, including business, regulation, consulting, law, and more. Covering the UK, Hong Kong and Singapore, specifically for those who only hear about research.

About this project

Hi, I'm Charlotte — a second-year Biochemistry student, and I built this site because I wish it had existed for me.

I grew up in Hong Kong before moving to the UK. Looking into career and internship opportunities in Hong Kong recently showed me how much student support exists there for exploring the business and consulting side of life sciences. That's what got me building this. I've always been drawn to that side of life sciences myself — especially biotechnology and AI, rather than the bench, but figuring out how to actually get there in the UK has been genuinely difficult.

This site is my attempt to close that gap. It's for university students, but my main goal is reaching secondary school students in the UK — the people still deciding what to study, who could really use some clarity before they commit to a degree path they don't fully understand yet.

I've included Hong Kong and Singapore alongside the UK partly because of my own background, but also because studying at university has introduced me to many students who are open to working in Asia. Singapore in particular is a fast-growing biotech hub, backed by heavy government investment in the sector, which made it feel like an especially relevant place to include. I wanted this to help them too.

This is very much a work in progress — I'm still learning a lot of this myself, and the site will keep growing as I do. If you work in one of these fields and think you could help, I'd love to hear from you.
